Conversation with Drew Pearson

Danny Smith's picture

I ran into Drew Pearson on Monday night and we had a nice but short conversation. A friend of mine and I were at a local bar in Dallas watching the Kansas-Memphis college basketball national championship game. We were waiting for my wife's music show to begin at the club next door. The name of this place is Memphis (on the Dallas Tollway and Beltline road) so we were rooting for Memphis jst for the fun of it as I guess a lot of Tigers had come to that bar to do.

I notice a guy at the table right night to me (literally 6 inches away) by himself but with his back to me. Something happens in the game and I make a basketball comment and I get a "yea I agree" and an outstretched fist to bump. I bump his fist without really looking at him too much (watching the screen) and I feel a huge ring. I look down to see a Super Bowl ring and look up to see Drew.

I had met Drew once before at a Charity auction at that same club (Memphis). My wife was singing there to raise funds. He remembered us so he pulle dover his chair and we struck up a small conversation while we watched the game. Lots of people were stopping to take his picture, trying to talk to him so it was hard to have too much of a conversation.

He was nice and we had fun laughing and joking during the game. I asked him about basketball and how much he played growing up. He said he played a lot but baseball was actually the sport he played the most growing up (even more than football). He said he had a free agent offer to join the Atlanta Braves but his dad would not let him sign.

Good news for us Cowboys fans I guess!

Anyway I mentioned our site and he said he would check it out and that he loves reading what fans have to say. It helps him do his job on the Cowboys report he does on local TV! Of course me and my friend do not have camera phones so we didn't get a pic to post here. Maybe next time...

He had to leave early and so did we but he said we would probably run into each other again as we go to the same places.

Thought I would pass that on - it was pretty cool to hang out for a bit with one of your idols...
