Cowboys offense talks about first-half performance

Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 08/23/2008 - 20:06.

The Cowboys' offensive starters turned in a complete effort in the first half against the Texans on Friday night, with the only possible miscue coming on a pass Tony Romo forced to Tony Curtis in the endzone that was intercepted.

Here's what Romo and other members of the Cowboys offense had to say after their performance on Friday night:

QB Tony Romo

On how they played: I thought it was good, I thought we were real efficient. On the interception: I tried to fake the guy a little bit and he did a great job, he got underneath the ball. It's got to be my guy or nobody. On the overall performance of the offense thus far: Last week wasn't as bad as it is and this week probably not as good as it is; it is what it is. It's the preseason and you have to prove and try and get ready to go for the first week. Marion ran well, the offensive line blocked their butt of tonight; it was a good combination. I think every time you step on the field you want to just accomplish getting better. Every time whether it's a practice or a preseason game, and even in real games you're always trying to get ready for tomorrow. That's the exciting thing about sports, you always have the opportunity to get better and improve upon what you did.

WR Patrick Crayton

... We just keep executing in practice and focus on some of the stuff; we'll probably start looking at Cleveland, probably more in-depth now and start preparing for them.

On how pleased he was with the offense: Everything offensively went well, passing game, the run game, just the way we moved the ball up the field. I thought the execution was nice. You can see the first two games we lost because of penalties and you can see what happens when we don't have any penalties. We're pretty tough. On how important preseason games are to players: They're real important because you get into a live game situation. You can't ever simulate game speed and game play in practice. When you get in there, everything is moving a little bit quick than it is in practice, it's good to get in there.

Coach Jason Garrett

... It's important to have balance between run and pass and when you are trying to balance them on the receivers. And there were a lot of different guys that were stepping up and making plays, I think the quarterbacks are making good decisions; I think it continues to attack the defense in different ways. There were a lot of good things and there were some things we will have to work on as well.On Barber picking up where he left off: He played well, he's such a good football player and it's really important to him, he works extremely hard and practice and then he plays hard. He's a guy who claims so much energy to our team and everyone kind of rallies around him so obviously it was good to get him touches and he was really productive with them.

On their performance tonight: Our guys are focusing really hard on executing well and we did that at times tonight and at other times not so well. We'll go back and try to clean it up in the next couple of days, but I thought all and all  it was a good effort minus a couple of big mistakes that we made, but we're going to work on rectifying those.

... I think what people will come to find out about our coaching staff is we have a plan for each of the preseason games and winning isn't the first and foremost thing we are thinking about. It's playing different guys, it's playing different formations, it's getting certain guys with this group or that group and making sure that these guys touch and these guys play together and all those kinds of things. We try to have different objectives so we can evaluate our team. Certainly, we want to win. We want to win them all. Whether it's a mini-camp, a preseason game or a regular-season game, you want to put your best foot forward. That's why we have different objectives and the first couple of weeks we accomplished some of our objectives, we were able to evaluate some of our players, this one we kept our starters in a little longer because we wanted to see how they were doing, so there were some good things we were doing and there are some things we obviously have to clean up, so we'll get back to work tomorrow doing that.
