Fast Start (Defense)
In the NFL getting off to a fast start is the most element of a winning team. If you can establish yourself and what you want to do early in the game you have a greart chance of winning. Last night was a great example of how to start fast. In the first quarter the Texans
were 1 of 4 on third down, had 4 rushing yards and 2 of the first 3 series were 3 and outs. That give the Cowboy offense a huge boost. Giving our offense the ball in good field position like stealing for 2 reasons, 1 we have a good offense and 2 we have a great punter.
What does having a good punter have to do with anything? Lets say our offense gets the ball at our 35 yard line and gets one first down that means were punting from our 45 yard line. Let's say we punt the ball for a 35 yard net which I believe is below Mate's (Matt Mcbriar) average. That puts the other offense on their 20 yard line having to go 80 yards on our defense. For fun say the opposing offense goes 3 and out and punts from their 25 for a 35 yard net, that give our offense the ball at our 40 yard line. This also means if our offense gets 1 first down they have more than 40% chance to score if they get 2 first downs it's almost a 70% chance. Defense anyone?
At times we did play sloppy but overall it was a solid performance. We had 2 critical mistakes on kickoff coverage but I was very impressed with our specail teams.
As a whole tell me what you all saw as fans. Tomorrow or Monday I want to look back at Roy Williams (he is off to a great start). --Kevin Burnett
