...on the game, the season and everything (a rant)

I don't like to post in anger, but to be honest, I'm not that angry right now.
Last year, the Cowboys won a lot of games and played extremely well. The playoff loss squandered all of that, and even squandered what was in fact a very strong performance through much of the game. When the team wins every stat but the score (the only stat that matters,) the loss is awfully hard to accept. When they are completely listless and get blown out before halftime, it's deflating, but you know they deserved it.
This year, the team was inconsistent, up and down, and injured all year. They never looked dominant, and they never put together a complete game. This team was 5-4 at the bye. Finishing 9-7 is not really that much of a disappointment. Starting out 5-4 may have been a disappointment if you bought into the preseason hype, but by now you should not be particularly surprised, or even disappointed, at the finish.
In Arizona, Romo played a great game, and the defense was pretty good, too. The Cowboys lost by six in a game where special teams gave up two TDs. Not a complete game. In Pittsburgh, the defense was solid throughout, and special teams had no big miscues, but the offense, led by Romo, lost it. Not a complete game. In the first Eagles game, the defense hemorrhaged points and yards, but the offense bailed them out. Not a complete game.
There was never a complete game, so why on earth would you expect a complete season?
Nearly everybody performed worse than we thought they would, and I still maintain it is because we expected too much. They are not as "loaded with talent" as all the experts tell us, and there is no reason to believe otherwise. After all, who says they are so incredibly talented? The same coaches we think should be fired? The same general manager we think is an idiot?
Face it, even when the right play was called - and, believe it or not, it often was - too many of the players simply got beat by the other guy. Call it heart or call it talent, it amounts to the same thing. They are not good enough. Say it with me: THEY.ARE.NOT.GOOD.ENOUGH.
Romo may or may not be the guy, but getting rid of him would set the team back years. He is a very good quarterback who can get better. If there is a QB to bring in as the #2 (and #3) who is actually credible and can even compete for the starting job, that can only make Romo better. And the team needs a credible back-up anyway.
Believe it or not, Romo had the lowest interception percentage of his career this year. Unfortunately, he also had a career high in fumbles. It was also Barber's career high in fumbles, and for both players, that was by a wide margin. T.O.'s one lost fumble was not a career high, but it was his first in four years. Why did everybody screw up so much? They may not be as good as we thought, but are they really this bad?
No. We have a lot of players who can do some things extremely well, but are plagued by mental lapses or physical limitations. Romo still turns the ball over too much. TO gives up in games. Barber is turning into a fumbler. Newman is our top DB and he's gotten burned or committed terrible penalties in crucial situations.
Great coaching can make them better. We do not have great coaches. Both coordinators are beginners, still learning the trade. The head coach is on his third stop in that role, having no skins on the wall from his prior teams. Special teams are so disastrous that the coach, if he had any integrity, would not wait to be fired. I fear that Jerry will keep Garrett out of the same loyalty that caused him to hang on to guys like Nate Newton long after they became liabilities. Garrett may be a great coach someday, but he is not making the team better now.
I was in favor of the Roy Williams trade at the time, but I was not in favor of the immediate contract extension for a guy who had not proven anything. Now I am afraid we are stuck with him. Too bad. If he had to play for his money, he might try harder.
Pacman Jones was brought in here as a gamble, and the pay-off was supposed to be 1) he'd be an upgrade in the secondary (FAIL), 2) he'd stay out of trouble (FAIL), and 3) He'd be a dynamic addition to the return game (EPIC FAIL.) Maybe I am picking on him, but he is a symbol of all that is wrong with this team. He's here because is so damn "talented." Only he's not. He needs to go. Tomorrow.
I need a little more time to fill out the list, but there need to be some players cut along with the coaches. Tomorrow.
I don't know if Jerry can lure a guy like Cowher here. I don't even know if Cowher is the right guy. Parcells wasn't, and he was brought in to instill the same sorts of things the team seems to be missing now. But I know the coaching search won't start until the current staff is gone. And the team won't get better until at least next September.
It's going to be a really long off-season.

Exactly... I got into this
Exactly...
I got into this very discussion last night at a party. I kept hearing the usual stuff after the game - "it is such a shame because this team is so talented they just don't play like a team.."
Names on paper do not translate to success in football - neither does draft status, measureables, etc, etc...
That is what I liked about Parcells and his staff and hate about Phillips and his. There is no demand for excellence, no fear put into these players - I could go on and on. As a matter of fact I think I will write a column about this now :)
