Thoughts about Buffalo...

Danny Smith's picture

Our man Romo struggled although maybe not as much as some think. The 5th interception was completely inexcusable but the others were not as bad. I always judge a QB by how he responds to this and whether or not the INT was a bad decision by forcing the ball, etc.

What makes the 5th pick so inexcusable was that if you watch the replays TO was wide open over the middle and Witten was stuck in cloud zone coverage on the right - and it was 1st down!!! No need to force the action...

It is being said around here the 1st interception may have been as much about Jason Witten as Romo. Romo was expecting Witten to run a Go route and he slowed down over the middle and changed his route. The second interception was the defender making a spectacular play on the ball. The 3rd was a tipped pass...And on and on...

Buffalo coached themselves out of winning the game - plain and simple. There were 2 instances were just simply handing the ball off would have won the game for them so I was hoping they would do something stupid and they did. When it was 3rd down on the Dallas 15yd line with 6:20 left in the game I said in my mind - if I am Buffalo here I just hand the ball off and kick a FG to go up by 11...

I saw the pass picked off by Newman and knew at that point the momentum had completely shifted. When you have a team on the ropes don give them a chance to change the momentum - especially not when your QB is mediocre.

Another instance was when they had a 3rd and 2 a little earlier in the game and were running the ball well with simple off tackles to that point. If they get a first down they run a lot more time off the clock and we probably lose the game. What do they call - a reverse! It gives our fast defense a chance to run people down so of course they do! They punt and the rest is history.

So my thoughts at the end of the game were more about bad coaching on the part of Buffalo versus them being unlucky, snake bit, etc. Good teams do not make poor decisions when they have the lead...

Tony was not on his game - bottom line but I thought it was particularly great to watch him grow just inside one game. When he could have been the gunslinger late in the game he checked down perfectly and moved the chains. I think he became a better QB by the end of that game so I am hoping we reap the rewards in future games. And Tony if you are reading this (he does know about this site) - just don become too enamored with the check downs in the flats - we do still like the gunslinging at times!
